Research into Omega 3 for possible help with dementia (extract taken from daily mail)
November 21st, 2007
“A diet rich in fish, omega 3 oils, fruit and vegetables can lower the chances of dementia by up to 60 per cent, research suggests.
But ‘overdosing’ on omega 6 fats - found in sunflower oil - could double the risk, say researchers.
In research published in the journal Neurology, French scientists examined the diets of 8,000 men and women over 65. Those who regularly consumed omega 3 - rich oils, such as flaxseed and walnut oil, reduced their risk of dementia by 60 per cent.
Those who ate fruit and vegetables daily cut their dementiaby up to 40 per cent.
But those with an ‘unbalanced’ diet overloaded with omega 6 oils such as sunflower or grapeseed oil in preference to omega 3 oils were twice as likely to develop dementia. A balanced diet should contain a correct ratio of fats because eating high quantities of omega 6-rich polyunsaturated fats, for example, can lead to lower levels of omega 3 fats being absorbed.”
The Need For Balance In The Body Of Omega 3 From Flax Seed & Omega 6 From Evening Primrose Oil
January 24th, 2007
It is important to maintain an appropriate balance of omega 3 and omega 6 as they work together to promote health.
An inappropriate balance contributes to the development of disease, e.g. omega 3 helps reduce inflammation and most omega 6 tend to promote inflammation.
The ideal ration 1:1 omega 3 & omega 6.
Many studies show most of us are lacking in omega 3 and taking to much omega 6 from an incorrect source which would also contain polyunsaturated fats e.g. margarine, pastries, cakes crisps etc. To counter this imbalance omega 3 can be increased.
Instead of cutting down on fats and oils, people should switch to the right ones for optimal health - FLAX SEED OIL AND EVENING PRIMROSE OIL
Beneficial Seed and Nuts to include in your Diet
August 3rd, 2006
FLAXSEEDS
High in omega 3 fats - important for vegetarians - these also contain phyto-oestrogens that may help to combat menopausal hot flushes and could provide some protection against both breast and prostate cancer. Flaxseeds should always be ground in a coffee grinder to ensure the body receives full nutritional value.
SUNFLOWER SEEDS
As well as containing vitamin E, zinc, selenium and magnesium, sunflower seeds are also rich in natural compounds that lower cholesterol.
ALMONDS
Rich in Vitamin E - thought to help slow ageing - zinc, magnesium, potassium and iron. Eat them whole, as research shows that almond skins alone contain 20 potent antioxidants to protect against heart disease.
